“A critic sees your weaknesses and attacks your worst self. A cheerleader sees your strengths and celebrates your best self. A coach sees your potential and helps you become a better version of yourself.”
Adam Grant, Hidden Potential
If you know me, you know that I love to read. And this quotation is, so far, my favorite of 2024. It eloquently captures what coaching is and why I do it. And it’s such a good reminder that, really, we all should have a coach! If you’re new to the idea of coaching, let me share a bit more about a coach’s role:
A coach listens.
A coach asks.
A coach reflects.
A coach reframes.

A good friend and brilliant coach uses the analogy of a mirror. She says that a coach acts as a mirror, reflecting back what the client shares to help them see where they've been and identify the next forward step on their journey. When we look in the mirror, we see what we always see. We see where we are today. But, as Adam Grant so eloquently states, a coach’s reflection helps us see the potential inside of us.
No matter our goals, working with someone who can see our potential and reflect it back to us is empowering. Isn’t the idea of becoming a better version of ourselves lovely?
